Melatonin

Melatonin can be given temporarily as a supplement to improve sleep along with a course of homeopathic melatonin (see below). It should never be used long-term however; it is a hormone and can have a disruptive effect in the wider endocrine system.  A better solution to sleep issues is to improve the melatonin metabolism by moderating the use of sugar/carbohydrates, sleeping in a dark room and by improving the day-night rhythm. Those who work night shifts should sleep in a very darkened room and use earplugs.  About Melatonin Melatonin is a hormone made by the pineal gland. Melatonin has been used as a treatment for a number of conditions, including jet-lag, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), depression and cancer.  When side-effects from melatonin do occur (which is common, even at doses that are significantly less than the recommended amount), they may include: - increase in blood pressure; - fatigue; - depression; - problems with fertility.  About Homeopathi...

Garlic Goodness

Good morning dear readers! This is a beautiful morning indeed, blue sky, quiet in the house, and I've found some amazing data about garlic to share with you - greatness of our Dear Father, who puts goodness in everything, even a little piece of innocent garlic! psss... at the end of this post you'll find a Tonic recipe using this ingredient.  Let's get started: First of all, a bit of history. Hippocrates, the father of natural medicine, used garlic in infectious diseases and particularly prescribed it for intestinal disorders. The workers building the Egyptian Pyramids (i.e Jews!) were fed garlic, onions and leeks. A natural antibiotic and antiseptic, garlic has been found to have antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal activity. Let's have a look in more details of all its benefits: Garlic and Acne Garlic may be used along with other ingredients like honey, vinegar and turmeric to treat acne scars and even prevent acne growth. Garlic acts as a cleanser and antibiotic...

Nuts for Walnuts!

Ever heard about this expression "brain food"? Omega 3 are supposed to help with brain function, and so do many natural products but today we'll focus on walnuts.  It has been believed that walnuts actually increase one's intellect. Studies have proven that consumption of walnuts do help in promoting the brain function. The Doctrine of Signatures stated that because the shape of the walnut resembled the brain, the nut would be beneficial for all ailments associated with the head and brain, including headaches. Walnuts contain omega-3 fatty acids which increase the activity of the brain. Omega-3 fatty acids, coupled with iodine and selenium, add to optimum functioning of the brain. A lack of omega-3 fatty acids cause hyperactivity, irritability and tantrums. Supplementing children's diet with walnuts compensates the deficit in essential fatty acids and alleviates their mood. It is even applicable to adults who are battling depr...

The Three "G"s : Ginseng, Ginger and Gingko

Between Ginger, Ginkgo and and Ginseng, we'll have a lot to talk about today! (I'll do most of the work :) Let's distinguish these three "G" to make sure we don't mix them up in a conversation! Ginger Root It is believed that its medicinal properties have been known in China for thousands of years. Ginkgo by the way is also a favorite of the Chinese, they think the tree is a symbol of longevity for some reason we'll discuss later BH. Finally, Ginseng root has been around as a medicine also for quite some time (although not as much as Ginger root) a few hundreds years - as energy tonic and other benefits, which will also cover later BH (told you it was going to be a long post!) So let's come back to our first "G" : Ginger Root's Benefits Anti-bacterial : Zingerone, a chemical compound which gives pungent character to the ginger root, is effective against E.coli induced diarrhea.  Anti-inflammatory : Studies have shown that ginger inhibits...

Some Useful Supplements in ADHD Cases

According to this book "The Kid Friendly ADHD and Autism Cookbook", we've got a few supplements that are known to be needed in cases of ADHD and autism. In this post we'll cover also some natural supplements that are good in promoting brain-function (like focus, memory and concentration) Magnesium, so prevalent in dark greens, vegetables, beans, nuts, and seeds, it poorly absorbed in the presence of maldigestion problems. Low levels can result in mood disorders, hyperactivity, distractability, impulsivity, sounds sensitivity, irritability, muscle spasms, depression, and poor muscle endurance.  B-vitamin deficiencies is frequent in children with ADHD or autism.  Essential fatty-acid deficiency is common in both ADHD and autism and shows up as eczema; poor hair quality; and problems with brain and neurological development, vision, immunity and bowel health.  Zinc deficiency in also common with children with ADHD. It usually results from maldigestion, malabsorption and...

Diatomaceous Earth - DE - Friend or Foe?

There's a very popular topic around here should you need a subject of conversation - that's worms, yes, of the intestinal kind (not the intellectual kind. I used to be a book worm, I guess I still am in a way).  Worms? Because they infect so many people so fast, it's important to find an alternative to the current medical solution which is basically poison to the body. For months I prayed to find one so we could get rid of these parasites, visiting my children's rectum every night (sorry for the visual).  I tried a soup recipe with all the types of food supposed to get rid of worms. Even homeopathy doesn't kill the parasites. Vermox, the medical option, works sometimes and sometimes not, but who knows what damage it does while it travels the body.  One day, I come across this post on hpathy.com, one of my favorite homeopathy reference website: "Stumbled upon this post, but I want to let anyone know who feels hopeless about parasites, especially worms. Food Gr...

Three Mushrooms for Memory

I’m always amazed at the diversity of natural products out there, designed by the Great Designer to help with all kinds of ailments. Even though I specialize in homeopathic products and therapeutics, I love to explore other options, especially when they can help with specific issues my ADD/ADHD patients have. functions such as mood, memory and cognitive capacity. Cordyceps Mushrooms for Cognitive Capacity I’d like to focus on the Cordycept Mushroom's mental benefit first. The fungus dilates the airways in the lungs , resulting in more oxygen to the blood, therefore - it promotes oxygenation. This means better cell function, because more oxygen reaches every cell. The energy level is also increased. In fact, it is used as a stimulant when added energy is needed for day-to-day activities. Not only it increases energy but also endurance and stamina. It removes weakness and fatigue… Even in healthy people, when someone is overworked, it alleviates fatigue. There’s a second benefit w...
